Wauwatosa and Blackhawk Golf Competition
Tosa wins, 17-13!
Held July 27, 2019
On Saturday, July 27, 12 brave golfers competed versus the Blackhawk Curling Club in what we hope is the First of Many "Ryder Cup" style golf competitions. We played at Hawk's View golf course in Lake Geneva, and the Wauwatosa side was victorious, 17-13. Congratulations and thanks go to Mark Blackman, Rob Booth, Dave Foley, Tom Havas, Vias Karaouzas, Oscar Koebel, Dave Lewis, Bill Lohan, Scott Masloroff, Mark Miller, Tom Rave, and Mike Vigil. We competed against Bob Compton, Jim Hughes, Ellyn Subak, John Nelson, Tony Jacobson, John Quisenberry, Bryant Schaefer, Paul Rudkin, Mike Woods, Robbie Hall, Henry Clement, and Harlan Edelman.
Weather was perfect despite threatening early morning skies. Warm, sunny, more than a slight breeze. Hawks View represented well, I highly encourage you to go play it sometime.
The crew played 36 holes, broken up into four separate 9 hole competitions.
First Nine - Two man scramble - Tosa jumps out to a 4 1/2 to 1 1/2 lead, fueled by Vigil/Foley's 22, each of them bombing in several putts of more than 20 feet.
Second Nine - Alternate Shot - Blackhawk clearly cooperates better than Tosa, dominating the back nine of the short course 4 1/2 to 1 1/2. Cumulative Score of the match is 6-6 and we broke for a lunch buffet that would make carnivores proud.
Third Nine - Fourball, one low score is the submission from each team of two players. Blackhawk won the early afternoon round, 3 1/2 to 2 1/2, taking an overall lead of 9 1/2 to 8 1/2.
Fourth Nine - Singles, everyone had a match against our 12 counterparts. As the afternoon sun started to set, and multiple beverages started to take their toll, and muscles started to tighten up....Wauwatosa dominated the individual matches, 8 1/2 to 3 1/2. Oscar Koebel won his match on the 9th hole to secure the team victory.
I am pleased to report that every single player on the Red-shirted Tosa Team contributed points to the effort, and we were led by two individuals who each personally contributed 2.25 towards our total of 17 - Dave Foley and Mark Miller.
Other Random thoughts and observations from the Day.........
a) Never underestimate the power of vodka
b) In the alternate shot part of the game, it's really poor form to put your partner into a planting bed filled with mulch. On another hole.
c) Dave Lewis drove two separate Par 4s in the last 18 holes. He was just getting warmed up!!
d) On Barn Hollow #10, it's good form to inform your opponent that he is about to tee off towards the wrong green.
e) Foley almost had the biggest bar tab in the world, taking closest to the hole on First 18 with a shot that was 5 inches short of the cup
f) Ellyn Subak took the long drive on the big course. She earned it fellas - I hit a drive about as good as I can, and it was 2 feet short of hers.
g) Blackhawk went off with 11 players for the first 7 holes or so, John Nelson overslept......
h) There is some talk of doing this again, maybe annually, maybe biannually, we will update once Tony and I have time to sit down over a beverage and talk it over.
Respectfully Submitted -
