WI State Senior Championships
WCC Men win First Event
Good curling, gentlemen!
Held January 18-20, 2019
WCC members Tom Rave, Mike Willeman, Harold Paul, and Carl Deutsch are the 2019 WI State Senior Champions!
The team's skip, Tom Rave, was kind enough to share a recap of the event and their journey:
The WSCA Men’s Championship was held at the Medford Curling Club which was founded in 1914. The games were played in a facility built in 1946 that featured a large wood burning fireplace that was a successful stimulant for naps taken on overstuffed furniture at its front.
In the 20 rink seniors event, the Tosa rink of Carl Deutsch at lead, Harold Paul at 2nd, Mike Willeman at 3rd and Tom Rave skipping won the first two games from Kettle Moraine rinks, with each game coming down to the final shot. The first one on Friday was tied coming home and was won with a takeout on the last shot. The second one Saturday afternoon was a three-point victory with the KM skip not making a difficult shot that would have tied the game.
On Saturday evening, our game was won against a rink from Rice Lake when hands were shook after six ends. Then on Sunday morning, an earlier victory occurred after only five ends against a rink from Milwaukee. Finally in the finals on Sunday afternoon, another Rice Lake rink shook hands with us during the seventh end.
This rink has been curling at the state and at national senior men’s championships over the last several years. In the state event, it was runner up in the 4th event in 2017, won the 2nd event last year and then won the 1st event this year. Plans have been made to defend the WSCA championship in 2020 at Kettle Moraine.
